“Light tomorrow with today!” stated Elizabeth Barrett browning. English illuminates every aspect of our lives; therefore, we must study English with fervor! Here, at QCCS, English encompasses the following:
Junior high, 7th and 8th grade, enjoys a grammar-based curriculum. This affords them one, last, final, intense concentration on the rules and regulations of our language. They also encounter vocabulary and literature on a regular basis.
High school English is divided, and offers students a choice between English I, or Honors English. Both classes have an emphasis on literature and the classics.
English I focuses on classic literature. Students read short stories, plays, poems, and novels. The pace is moderate with regular assignments and quizzes. Vocabulary and writing also play an important role in this curriculum. All in all, students should learn to read and appreciate classic literature, become familiar with the elements of literature, use critical thinking and reading strategies, appreciate verbiage, and use literature as a motivation for writing creatively and critically.
Honors English is faster paced and offers more opportunities for creative expression. 9th and 10th grades focus on classic short stories, plays, poems, and novels. They are also challenged with oral expression. They debate relevant, current issues in front of the entire school. Vocabulary and writing are also an integral part of the curriculum. 11th and 12th grades specialize in their reading endeavors. American literature is spotlighted on year, and English literature the next. The “all in all”, as stated above, applies also to Honors English. In addition, students should develop poise and skill in public speaking, quick thinking verbal techniques, and a competency in all areas of communication.
Communication is a life-long challenge. Speaking, listening, reading, and writing are valued skills that are utilized daily. English offers excellence in our relationships and careers. The study of English is serious business, the business of QCCS!
