On May 21, 2004, Temple Christian High School was suddenly closed by the Church Board of Directors at Moline Gospel Temple. This action prompted concerned parents and teachers to unite together, in the spirit of Nehemiah, to save the high school. Out of this effort, the Quad Cities Christian School was formed with a parent elected Board of Directors, an enrollment of fifty students, and an administrative and teaching staff of eight. Rev. James R. Brinkley agreed to serve as President of the Board of Directors and Rev. William Olmstead agreed to serve as Administrator. Rev. Brinkley led in the development of the organizational leadership, by-laws, strategic plan, and policies of the school. Rev. Olmstead led in the development of the new administrative and teaching staff. The first day of school began August 17, 2004. This was a very aggressive effort and, with God’s help, the school was able to accomplish in a few months what it normally takes a school a few years to accomplish.
Through the help of the members of The Heritage Corps Salvation Army, Quad Cities Christian School was provided a temporary facility at the Heritage Corps Salvation Army building located at 2200-5th Avenue, Moline, Illinois. When Temple Christian High School closed, the students, parents, and teachers were left without a facility and the use of the existing facility by the newly organized Quad Cities Christian School was not allowed. Seeing the need to help parents and teachers continue a secondary Christian education program, the members of the Heritage Temple Corps offered to open their facility for parent and teacher organizational development meetings and later agreed to provide their facilities for the operation of the school for the 2004-2005 academic school year, until a permanent facility could be found. With the help of students, parents, teachers, and members of the Salvation Army, the facility at 2200-5th Avenue was rearranged to accommodate needed classrooms, computer room, and office facilities. The hard work of the teachers and parents enabled the school not only to continue its academic program, but to continue its athletic program as well. On June 3, 2005, QCCS awarded diplomas to its first graduating class of ten seniors.
At the end of the first year, the QCCS Board of Directors requested the Heritage Corps Salvation Army to allow one additional year at the Salvation Army Center, in order to provide more time to find a permanent building and to raise needed funding for the new facility. The Salvation Army gave approval for QCCS to occupy their facility for one additional school year through 2006. This provided the much needed time for the Board of Directors to locate a permanent facility. The school continued its academic and athletic programs at the Salvation Army Center. On June 2, 2006 diplomas were awarded to the second graduating class of twelve seniors.
At the end of the second year, the Board of Directors elected new officers to continue the academic and athletic programs of the school. The new President, John VanWalbeek led in the purchase, development, and transformation of the new permanent facility. After much work by the Board of Directors, the old Christian Science Church building, located at 1401-16th Street, Moline, Illinois, was purchased for the permanent site of Quad Cities Christian School. Tremendous efforts were made by the Board of Directors, parents, teachers, and students in getting the new facility ready for the 2006-2007 school year. The start of the school year was delayed because of the many inspection requirements and ordnances imposed on the school by the city of Moline. Even though the start of the school year was delayed and renovation of the facility was still in progress, the school continued its academic and athletic programs. On June 1, 2007, diplomas were awarded in the newly renovated chapel to the third graduating class of seven seniors.
Work continues on the school building as the parents, teachers, and students get ready for the start of the 2007-2008 school year. The faculty and students of Quad Cities Christian School invite interested parents and students to share in their miracle by becoming a part of the Quad Cities Christian School family.
